Boz Boorer is best known as one of Morrisey's co-writers. Also a great guitarist, Boz was a member of the Polecats during the 80's. Hammond caught up with boz to talk about his many collaberations, and to see just what he's got in the pipeline at the moment.
HOLV: Hello Boz, how are things?
BB: Not bad, enjoying some time at home for a change.
HOLV: We think alongside quiffed film critic Mark Kermode, you are probably the UK's biggest rockabilly icon. Do you think the genre is in need of a revival or has it had its day?
BB: Well it comes and goes, I always like it when it goes through a resurgence. I don't know if will ever be what it was in the 80s again, popularity wise, but if it was to return it wouldn't be a bad thing
HOLV: How often do you write songs these days? Have you got any secret music projects ticking away in the background?
BB: I write as often as I can. I have just recorded a Crazy Cavan tribute album with lots of people, and am finishing that off as well as the new Morrissey album.
HOLV: Yeah, obviously you are associated with Morrissey, but he's not the only great musician you have worked with over the years. If you could form a group tomorrow who would you include in it from the people you've worked with over the decades?
BB: Well it's a strange question because the people are so diverse and wouldn't gel together because their styles are so different. Although It would probably be a rockabilly band with my wife Lyn on bass, with Ronnie Dawson singing!
HOLV: The music world is anticipating a new Morrissey album towards the end of the year, is there anything you can tell us about it and your involvement?
BB: Not really as it is not finished yet but I am very involved in it
HOLV: You told us earlier that you will be at home for a bit. How are you planning on spending your time? Cheeky pints of bitter and a newspaper in the local or something a little more exciting?
BB: I recorded with a singer called Cookie on Monday and Tuesday, a young female singer with Phil from the polecats on double bass and Andy Neal on guitar. I think it's got a very early sunny blues sound. I was also at the Albert Hall last night as my daughter , pearl was singing there , so I keep busy.
HOLV: Lastly its the end of the gig, the crowd are deciding what you play for the encore, if you could choose any song at all what would you really want to play to finish things off?
BB: Well the crowd don't really decide what you play for an encore! But I'd probably have to play Rockabilly Guy even if I didn't write it! That or Jack the Ripper or Now My Heart is Full , or Wild Side of Life , or Hometown Blues or Too Many Nights in the Roadhouse or or or etc etc
