Interview: Andy Macfarlane of The Twilight Sad

One of Scotland's most exciting new bands, 'The Twilight Sad' will be coming to a Scottish city near you very shortly. Due in at the Liquid Room's in Edinburgh on March the 20th, the band then travel to Glasgow the following day to play at the legendary King Tuts. Not finishing there, Twilight Sad will also head up north to play Moshula in the Granite City on the 22nd. The band spent much of 2007 touring, playing and supporting the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Idlewild, Micah P Hinson and Snow Patrol. Their live show's should certainly be one of the 'must see gig's' for 2008. We caught up for a quick word with Andy MacFarlane ahead of their UK tour.

HOLV: What's it like being in the Twilight sad at the minute?

AM: It's grand at the minute, we're getting a chance to get some new material together for the next record.

HOLV: What can fans expect to see when they come to a twilight sad gig?

AM: Probably someone complaining about how loud it is, that happens sometimes.

HOLV: Who's idea was it for the old fashioned illustrations on your artwork?

AM: Tthat was my idea. 1950s advertisements and graphic illustrations from that period, have a style that i think relates to our songs in the way that they seem innocent on the surface but when you look at it more, it can seem quite disturbing.

HOLV: Usually in a band there's always one guy who has the final say on setlist's and other band decisions. Is this true with yourselves, or are you a rather democratic lot within the band?

AM: we are more of a democratic band, you can't rely on one person's opinion all the time. That doesn't work unless you're Guns n' Roses i suppose.

HOLV: Recently i've been championing Glasgow as one of the World's best music cities. It seems a rather exciting place to be at the moment from a musical perspective. What do you think makes Glasgow such a great music city?

AM: More than likely the fact that not many people will hold back on what they think. That might be a bit of a generalisation, but pretty much if your shite, someone's going to tell you you're shite, which is fair enough i think.

HOLV: I see you have a UK tour coming up where you are due to play in a number of great venues, is there anywhere in particular you looking forward to playing?

AM: Glasgow, Edinburgh and London are always good, we've never played in night and day in Manchester before, although we've been in drinking a few times and it seems like an alright place. im not too sure what to expect from the other dates but im looking forward to it, we've got an extra guy playing with us now as well so it'll be interesting to see how that sounds.

HOLV: Thanks, best of luck with the tour and the new album!
